Wood Brewery Ltd plastic tray dating from the early 1980s. The Wood Brewery was founded in Wistanstow, near Craven Arms, in 1980 by Anthony Wood, his brother Edward Wood, and their father Basil Wood. In 1968 the Wood family bought the Plough Inn in Wistanstow from the Wrekin Brewery Co. Ltd. They started the brewery from the Plough's outbuildings in 1980, and the pub became the brewery tap. The brewery was extended over a number of years and the firm's beers became well renowned in Shropshire. The business won a number of awards for its beers from the Campaign for Real Ale. Shropshire Lad, which was launched in 1998, became one of the most popular ales in the county. Shropshire Lass, a blonde beer, was introduced in 2007. With some big plans, the Company was taken over by Stephen O'Neill and Patrick McGucklan in 2018. The business relied heavily on its pub trade which accounted for 85% of its sales. Trade was decimated in 2019 when the coronavirus pandemic resulted in the lockdown of all its pubs. The Company did sell bottled beers but not enough for its long-term survival. In February 2022 the brewery was forced to close. The Wood Brewery Ltd's two pubs, the Plough and the Royal Oak in Church Eaton, are still trading.
