Bernard's Ltd black backed steel tray dating from around 1900. Daniel Bernard and John Mackay Bernard were the sons of Thomas Bernard, who was one of the founders in 1840 of Thomas & James Bernard which owned the old Edinburgh Brewery in Canongate. After the death of their father in 1874, Daniel and John took control of Thomas & James Bernard. When a new Edinburgh Brewery was built for the firm in 1887, Daniel and John fell out resulting in Daniel leaving the business. He set up a new rival Company which traded under his own name. Daniel remained at the old Edinburgh Brewery while his brother became the owner of the new Edinburgh Brewery on Slateford Road. In 1889 Daniel registered his Bayonets Brand trademark. A new Company was registered as Bernard's Ltd in 1892. When the North British Railway Company requisitioned the old Edinburgh Brewery site in 1893, Daniel was forced to build a new Bernard's Brewery at Gorgie, Edinburgh. Bernard's Ltd was liquidated in 1904 and brewing ceased. The brewery was sold to the Lothian Distillery Co. Ltd. The site was later acquired by T. & H.Smith Ltd, a local pharmaceutical business. The BB Trademark most probably refers to 'Bayonet Brand' The manufacturer's mark states - Wm Brownlie. Glasgow The tray pictured is in a terrible state and I would love to find another good condition version.
