Plymouth Breweries Ltd alloy tray dating from the 1950s. The Regent Brewery was established in the 1850s in Stonehouse, Plymouth. The brewery was owned by Thomas Edwards in 1852, Thomas Prynn in 1857 and by Samuel Vosper from 1860. Five breweries were amalgamated in 1889 to form Plymouth Breweries Ltd. The breweries were Samuel Vosper's Regent Brewery, Amanda Henrietta Butcher's Anchor Brewery of Stonehouse, George Ryall's Frankfort Street Brewery, Hicks & Co. South Deven Brewery on Willow Street, and Frederick Richard Vaughan's Saltash Brewery. Brewing was centred at the Regent Street Brewery and by 1894 the other four breweries had been closed. Plymouth Breweries Ltd acquired and closed the Torquay Brewing & Trading Co. Ltd brewery in 1897, Greenslade Brothers St. Mary's Church Brewery and Swayne & Co. Ltd Ellacombe Brewery, both of Torquay, in 1925 and 1928 respectively. Plymouth Breweries Ltd with its Regent Brewery was acquired by Courage Ltd in 1970 and the Company changed its name to Courage PB Ltd in 1971. Courage Ltd was taken over by the Imperial Tobacco Group Ltd in 1972 becoming Courage (Western) Ltd in 1973. A vast new Berkshire Brewery was opened at Worton Grange near Reading in 1980 leading to the eventual closure of the Regent Brewery by Scottish Courage Ltd in 1984.
