Daniell & Sons Breweries Ltd alloy tray dating from the 1950s.
The Company was founded by Thomas Daniell at West Bergholt in 1866. One of Thomas Daniell's sons had joined him by 1872 and the other sons ran the Castle Brewery in Colchester and the East Donyland Brewery in Rowhedge. In 1877 the three Daniell's breweries combined to form Daniell and Sons Ltd becoming Daniell and Sons Breweries Ltd in 1887. The Castle Brewery was closed in 1892 when all brewing was transferred to West Bergholt and the East Donyland Brewery closed in 1897.
The West Bergholt Brewery was acquired by Truman, Hanbury, Buxton & Co. Ltd in 1958 and the brewing operations were moved to London. Brewing ceased in 1959 and the site was used as maltings, bottling and a distribution depot. When Truman's closed in 1988 the buildings were demolished a year later and the West Bergholt Brewery was converted into residential use.
