J.Arkell & Sons Ltd Ceramic Ashtray

J.Arkell & Sons Ltd ceramic ashtray dating from the 1930s. The business was founded in 1843 by John Arkell at Lower Stratton, near Swindon. A new Kingsdown Brewery was built in 1861 at Stratton St. Margaret, Swindon. In 1877 maltings were erected on the site. In 1927 the Company was registered as J.Arkell & Sons Ltd and a bottling plant was built that year. The Company owns around 100 public houses and is still brewing independently.
