John Newton Mappin was involved in brewing in the mid 1840s when he partnered with William Bradley at the Soho Brewery on Ecclesall Road, Rotherham. In 1849 Mappin moved into Singleton & Wingfield's Brewery in Masbrough, which he leased until 1862, when he acquired full ownership. At the turn of the 20th century new finance became available to increase Mappin's tied estate to 20 public houses. Before World War I business grew steadily and the Company gained a reputation for its quality ales, winning awards at the National Brewers' Exhibition in London on no fewer than eleven occasions between 1901 and 1915. The peak of its achievement was reached in 1914, when Mappin's won a Gold Medal for best draught beer, and the Gold Challenge Cup for best bottled beer. In 1914 Mappin's also took over the Sheffield & Rotherham Brewery Ltd with its small amount of tied houses. In 1949 the Company was re-registered as Mappin's Brewery Ltd.
