John J.Hunt Ltd ceramic jug dating from the 1930s. The business was founded in York by Joseph Hunt in 1836. When John died in 1858 his nephew, Henry Hunt, succeeded him. Henry died after only three years in charge and the Ebor Brewery was let to various occupants until 1875 when John Joseph Hunt, Henry's only son, took over running of the brewery himself. He gradually built up the business, and from 1890 began to acquire public houses at a steady rate. In 1895 the firm was registered as John J.Hunt Ltd. In 1897 the Company acquired local competitor, Brett Brothers City Brewery and its 15 licensed houses. Brewing ceased but the buildings were used by Hunt's as offices and stores. Hunt's used agencies in Escrick, Elvington, Darlington and Malton to widen the distribution of its eight ales and stouts. With increasing sales, additional capacity was required, and in 1899 an already extended Ebor Brewery was comprehensively rebuilt. The Company's next acquisition was that of the Tockwith brewery of Robert Brogden Sons & Co. Ltd and its 60 public houses, which were purchased in 1904. Hunt's acquired a controlling interest in Scarborough & Whitby Breweris Ltd in 1923 and purchased it outright with 120 public houses, in 1949. Apart from this, after the death of John.J.Hunt in 1927, the company preferred expansion by building its own public houses particularly in York's expanding suburbs. In 1953 the Company, its Ebor Brewery, and 230 public houses, were acquired by J.W.Cameron & Co. Ltd. Brewing ceased in 1956. The brewery stood derelict until 1972 when it was purchased by Shepherd Homes and was redeveloped for housing. The manufacturer's mark states - Minton England Regicor
