James Shipstone & Sons Ltd Round Tin

James Shipstone & Sons Ltd tin tray dating from the early 1970s. The business was founded in New Basford, near Nottingham, by James Shipstone in 1852. The Company was registered as James Shipstone & Sons Ltd in 1891. A new Star Brewery was built on the same site in 1900. The Company acquired the Beeston Brewery Co. Ltd in 1922, which it converted into maltings, and purchased the Wheatsheaf Brewery of George Hooley Ltd, Nottingham, in 1926. By 1939 Shipstone's owned 550 licensed premises, thirty diesel lorries for long distance deliveries, and fifty horses for local work. The brewery remained independent, brewing 'Shippos' beers, as they were known locally, until 1978 when the Star Brewery and 280 tied houses were acquired by Greenall Whitley & Co. Ltd. In 1990 Greenall's announced that they were ending all beer production to concentrate on its retail business. The resulting closure of the Star Brewery was a sad day for brewing in Nottingham. The brewery buildings are still standing.
