J.Hey & Co. Ltd tin tray dating from the late 1950s. The Manningham Brewery was originally built in 1861 for Clement Taylor & Son. Joseph Hey and his batchelor uncle, William, went into business under the title of W. & J.Hey in 1874. They were merchants and bottlers of ales and porter. The bottled beer trade provided a strong foundation for future success. When William retired in 1891 Joseph commenced brewing in partnership with an experienced brewer, Sam Mitchell. In 1893, the Northbrook Brewery, as it was now named, was acquired by Joseph Hey from the Harper family, and the Company was registered as J.Hey & Co. Ltd. The Company had a reputation for brewing fine quality bottled ales, and this was rewarded in both 1920 and 1930, when it was awarded Brewers Championship Gold Cup for best beer in a bottle at the Brewer's Exhibitiion. The Northbrook Brewery and its 75 public houses were acquired by Samuel Webster & Sons Ltd in 1966. Brewing ceased in 1967 and the Northbrook Brewery was demolished. The manufacturer's mark states - Reginald Corfield Ltd Lombard Road. London S.W.19.
