Hyde's Anvil Brewery Ltd tin tray dating from the 1960s. A small brewing business, the Crown Brewery based in Audenshaw, was acquired by Alfred and Ralph Hyde, from their grandfather, Thomas Hyde, in 1863. As the Hydes business was developed it was managed by a variety of family members from different generations and by virtue of its increasing fortunes it outgrew its premises on several occasions. it moved to the Victoria Brewery, Lower Moss Lane in 1870, followed by the Mayfield Street Brewery, Ardwick, in 1882 and the Monmouth Street Brewery, Rusholme in 1887. In 1895 Hyde's famous Anvil trademark was adopted. In 1899. with William Hyde in control, the business moved to its long-term home at the Queen's Brewery site on Moss Lane West, Brooks Bar, Mosside, Manchester. Under William's leadership the Company began to acquire an estate of public houses through which to distribute more of Hyde's ales. The Company was registered as Hyde's Queen Brewery Ltd in 1912. When William died in 1916 his sister Annie ran the business successfully for the next 56 years. In 1944 the name of the Company was changed to reflect its trademark becoming Hyde's Anvil Brewery Ltd. The Company's reputation for consistency and quality was a key reason for a number of other breweries deciding to contract out brewing of their own beers to Hyde's Anvil Brewery Ltd, especially during the 1980s and 1990s. In 2012 the Company relocated its brewing operations to Media City in Salford and the Queen Brewery was closed. The 'Beer Studio' is entirely dedicated to the production of cask ales. Hyde's beers are distibuted through its 50 managed and tenanted houses, as well as wholesalers and pub groups. The vast majority of its pubs are based in the North West of England and North Wales. The Company is still brewing independently. The manufacturer's mark states - Printed in Great Britain by Reginald Corfield Ltd. M0223
