Friary Meux Ltd tin tray dating from the 1960s. At the time the tray featured was manufactured, Friary Meux Ltd was brewing at their only remaining brewery, the Friary Brewery, based in Guildford, Surrey. The Horseshoe Brewery, once owned by Meux's Brewery Co. Ltd, had closed in 1964.
Friary Meux Ltd tin tray dating from the 1960s. The Friary Brewery, located on Commercial Road, Guildford, was established in 1865. When Holroyd's business was acquired in 1889 the Company was registered as Friary & Holroyd Ltd. Healy's was purchased in 1890 but it was not until 1895 that the Company was registered as Friary, Holroyd & Healy's Breweries Ltd. London based Meux's Brewery Co Ltd, on the other hand, was founded around 1764. The Company and its Horseshoe Brewery was registered in 1888. Brewing was transferred to Thorne Brothers former Nine Elms Brewery in 1921. The original Horseshoe Brewery was demolished in 1922 and the Nine Elms Brewery was renamed the Horseshoe Brewery. Friary, Holroyd & Healy's Breweries Ltd merged with Meux's Brewery Co. Ltd in 1956 to form Friary Meux Ltd. The merged Company entered into liquidation in 1961 and was acquired by Allied Breweries Ltd in 1964. The Horseshoe Brewery closed that year and the Friary Brewery ceased brewing in 1969. The Friary Brewery was demolished during 1973 and 1974. The Friary Meux brand was later revived by Allied Breweries Ltd in 1979 but was discontinued by the Carlsberg-Tetley Group in 1997. The manufacturer's mark states - Printed in Great Britain by Reginald Corfield Ltd. 0139
