Ferris & Son cardboard showcard dating from the 1890s. The Dawlish Brewery was opened in High Street by local businessman, John Till, in 1817. The brewery site included its own artisan well and was a major employer in the town. In 1825, for reasons of ill health, John Till sold the business to Richard Brock Ferris. The brewery supplied ales, mild, stouts and porter locally, and it also produced lemonade, ginger beer and mineral waters. The firm expanded its tied house estate by acquiring public houses locally including Teignmouth, Holcombe, Starcross, Cockwood and Dawlish. The Dawlish Brewery remained in the hands of the Ferris family until 1926 when it was sold with about 30 public houses and the mineral water factory to Heavitree Brewery Ltd in Exeter. The brewery was closed but still remains standing. The manufacturer's mark states - James Dilkes & Co. Nottingham
