Courage, Barclay, Simonds & Co. Ltd brass menu holder dating from the 1960s. The Anchor Brewery of Courage & Co. Ltd was based in Bermondsey and the Anchor Brewery of Barclay, Perkins & Co. Ltd was based in Southwark, both in Greater London. The Bridge Street Brewery of H. & G.Simonds Ltd was based in Reading, Berkshire.
Courage, Barclay, Simonds & Co. Ltd brass menu holder dating from the 1960s. Barclay, Perkins & Co. Ltd's Anchor Brewery, based in Southwark, merged with Courage & Co. Ltd's Anchor Brewery, based in Bermondsey, in 1955 to form Courage & Barclay Ltd. Courage & Barclay Ltd merged with H. & G.Simonds Ltd and its Bridge Street Brewery, based in Reading, in 1960 becoming Courage, Barclay, Simonds & Co. Ltd. Barclays became a lager only brewer in 1958 and the Anchor Brewery, based in Southwark, eventually closed in the early 1970s. After the name of the Company was simplified to Courage Ltd in 1970, the business was acquired by the Imperial Tobacco Group Ltd in 1972. A vast new Berkshire Brewery was built at Worton Grange in 1978 and all brewing was transferred there resulting in the eventual closure of both Simond's Bridge Street Brewery in 1979 and Courage's old Anchor Brewery in 1981.
