Carlisle Old Brewery Co. Ltd tin tray dating from 1966. The brewery was founded in 1756 and traded as Atkinson & Son. The Old Brewery was rebuilt by Sir Richard Hodgson in the 1800s and traded as Sir Richard Hodgson & Co. Ltd until 1916. At that time the government's Liquor Control Board, later named the Carlisle & District State Management Scheme, took over the running of the brewery as an experiment to control drunkeness, particularly that of munitions workers, during WWI. The site was used as the State Management Brewery until 1973. The Old Brewery was purchased by T.& R.Theakston Ltd in 1974 which caused it financial difficulties due to the high costs of running the business. Fortunately Matthew Brown & Co Ltd came to the rescue but they themselves were taken over by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd in 1987. Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd closed the Carlisle brewery immediately and production was transferred to Workington. The brewery lay derelict for many years and part of the brewery was eventually demolished with the rest developed as student accommodation. The manufacturer's mark states - 6 MB Made in GT.Britain
