Randalls Vautier Ltd ceramic jug dating from 1911. The Company was founded in 1819. It was born out of a combination of two businesses which were both based in St. Helier in Jersey, one on Clare Street and the other, at Minden Place. The Clare Street brewery was originally named the New Market Brewery, and was owned by Thomas Turner. It started on Beresford Street, then moved to Gloucester Street, before eventually ending up on Clare Street in the 1830s. The Minden Place brewery was originally two breweries, one owned by Mr F.de la Taste and the other by Mr J.B.Quirk. Between 1833 and 1837 the two owners operated from these combined premises, known as the Old James Street Brewery, until Mr de la Taste moved his interest to Wesley Street and this became known as the Caesarean Brewery. Brewing continued at the Minden Place Brewery, as well as a bottling department, and stables for horses and their wagons. Another site, on Pierson Road, provided the malting facility for the Clare Street Brewery. Robert Randall was the maltster at Minden Place and when Mr Quirk died he purchased the brewery for his second son, Charles Walter Randall in 1847. The Clare Street Brewery was run by Charles' brother William Albert Randall who purchased the Minden Place Brewery from Charles in 1898. Brewing was concentrated at Clare Street during the First World War but the Minden Street Brewery reopened briefly in 1918. When Charles Walter Randall died in 1919, the Minden Street Brewery was closed. Another member of the family, Harry Aubin Randall, continued to run the business very successfully until his own death in 1935. Leaving no will, the Company was inherited by Harry's widow and his sister. The business was registered in 1936. Mrs Violet Walker became its first female Managing Director until the 1960s. The Company was purchased by Edward Greenall in 1964. In 1978, wine and spirit merchants J.F.Vautier was acquired and the firm became known as Randalls Vautier Ltd. Brewing ceased in 1992 but continued to trade as a wholesaler and pub company with 30 tied houses. The Clare Street Brewery was redeveloped into the Company's head office which was opened in 2005.
