J.G.Swales & Co. Ltd tin tray dating from the 1960s. The business was founded at Blackfriars Street in Salford, by James Wheatear in the 1830s. The Company traded as Wheatear and Swales and operated from the Victoria Brewery in Salford until 1891, when it was registered as J.G.Swales & Co. Ltd. In 1900, Swales acquired the Naval Brewery in Hulme, from Wilsons Brewery Ltd and transferred all brewing there. J.G.Swales & Co. Ltd acquired Thomas W.Farrimond of Wigan in 1946 and used this second brewery in Newtown until 1961, when brewing ceased. The Company, its Naval Brewery and 62 public houses, were acquired by Boddington's Breweries Ltd in 1970 and brewing ceased. The manufacturer's mark states - Made in Great Britain by Reginald Corfield Ltd. 5079
