The Wapping Spring Brewery was founded in Lindley Moor, Huddersfield, by farmer, John Ainley, in the 1850s.
\nJohn Ainley’s sons also worked for the brewery when the firm traded as John Ainley & Sons.
\nThe Company was registered as John Ainley & Sons Ltd in 1899.
\nThe Company had a reputation for brewing high quality beers using soft water from the Wapping Spring including Wappy Stout, Knockout Ale, and Bitter Beer. Guinness Extra Stout was also bottled on site.
\nWappy Stout was thought to have medicinal properties which was prescribed by local doctors for those individuals with ‘a weak constitution’.
\nThe Wapping Spring Brewery, with 19 public houses, was acquired by Samuel Webster & Sons Ltd in 1957.
\nThe brewery was closed and the site was sold in 1958.
