Thomas Taunton – Guildford Breweries<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n The Friary Brewery, on Commercial Road, Guildford, was established in 1865. Friary, Holroyd & Healy’s Breweries Ltd<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n Healy & Co. of Chertsey, with its Crown Brewery and 27 public houses, was purchased in 1890, but it was not until 1895 that the Company was registered as Friary, Holroyd & Healy’s Breweries Ltd. Friary Meux Ltd<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n The Friary Brewery merged with Meux’s Brewery Co. Ltd in 1956 to form Friary Meux Ltd. \nThomas Taunton, who also ran the Cannon Brewery in Guildford, developed the business during the latter part of the 19th century.
\nHe traded as Thomas & Silas Taunton, and the firm was described as ‘Ale & Porter Brewers, and Wine & Spirit Merchants’. The business included two breweries, the Canon Brewery and the Friary Brewery, both in Guildford, and stores in Aldershot and the Isle of Wight.
\nAround 1870, the Taunton’s had a short-lived partnership with the wealthy Hoskins-Master family, who took full control of the Friary Brewery in 1873.
\nThe Hoskins-Masters immediately expanded the brewery site and started to purchase their own public houses.
\nWhen George Holroyd’s Byfleet Brewery, with 15 public houses, was acquired in 1889, the Company was registered as Friary & Holroyd Ltd.<\/p>\n
\nThe Chertsey Brewery closed in 1898, and the Byfleet Brewery closed in 1909. All brewing was concentrated at the Friary Brewery in Guildford.
\nIn 1910 the Company acquired Lambert & Norris Ltd of Arundel in West Sussex, with 81 public houses.
\nLambert & Norris Ltd became a subsidiary of Friary, Holroyd & Healy’s Breweries Ltd.
\nBy 1928 the Company’s tied estate totalled over 400 public houses.
\nLambert & Norris Ltd was voluntarily liquidated in 1935 when Its Eagle brewery was closed, but the site was used as a depot until 1955.<\/p>\n
\nThe merged Company entered into liquidation in 1961, and was acquired by Allied Breweries Ltd, with 672 public houses, and 150 off-licences.
\nMeux’s Horseshoe Brewery ceased production in 1964.
\nBrewing ceased in 1969, when all production was transferred to Ind Coope’s brewery in Romford, Essex.
\nThe Friary Brewery was demolished during 1973 and 1974.
\nThe site was redeveloped as a shopping centre and bus station.
\nThe Friary Meux brand was later revived by Allied Breweries Ltd in 1979, but it was discontinued by the Carlsberg-Tetley Group in 1997.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
