Scottish Brewers Ltd Merger with Newcastle Breweries Ltd in 1960<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n In 1960 Scottish Brewers Ltd merged with Newcastle Breweries Ltd to form Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd. Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd Expansion<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n The Company continued its expansion and purchased the Home Brewery Co. Ltd of Nottingham, with 447 public houses, in 1986, and Matthew Brown & Co. Ltd of Blackburn, with 550 public houses, in 1987. S&N Joint Takeover<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n S&N was acquired jointly by Heineken and Carlsberg in 2008, and in 2009 the Company name changed to Heineken UK Ltd. \nAt that time Scottish Brewers Ltd owned three breweries, the Fountain Brewery of William McEwan & Co. Ltd, the Holyrood Brewery of William Younger & Co. Ltd, both based in Edinburgh, and the Red Tower Lager Brewery Co. Ltd, based in Manchester.
\nNewcastle Breweries Ltd also owned two breweries, the Tyne Brewery based in Newcastle, and the Duddingston Brewery, formely owned by Robert Deuchar Ltd, based in Edinburgh.
\nSoon after the merger the Duddingston Brewery was closed, although its maltings continued to be used by S&N until the early 1970s.
\nThe Red Tower Brewery was renamed the Royal Moss Side Brewery in 1961.
\nThe Abbey Brewery, a dormant building once owned by William Younger & Co. Ltd, was redeveloped as S&N’s new Head Office in Edinburgh.
\nThe Holyrood Brewery was closed in 1986.<\/p>\n
\nThe acquisition of Matthew Brown & Co. Ltd included the brewery of T. & R.Theakston Ltd which S&N sold back to the family in 2003.
\nAfter the purchase of Courage Ltd in 1995 the Company became the UK’s biggest brewer and was renamed Scottish Courage Ltd.
\nPart of the deal included ownership of John Smith’s Tadcaster Brewery Co. Ltd, the state-of-the-art Berkshire Brewery of Reading, and the Cork brewery of Beamish & Crawford Ltd, in Ireland.
\nIn 1996 the Home Brewery Co. Ltd was closed and further brewery closures included the Fountain Brewery in 2004, and the Tyne Brewery in 2005.
\nAll brewing from the Tyne Brewery was transferred to the Northern Clubs Federation Brewery in Gateshead which had been purchased in 2004.
\nIn 2006 the Company name reverted back to Scottish & Newcastle UK Ltd which purchased the Caledonian Brewery Co Ltd of Edinburgh in 2008 to replace the Fountain Head Brewery.<\/p>\n
\nAlthough the Federation Brewery and the Berkshire Brewery were closed by Heineken UK Ltd in 2010, John Smith’s Tadcaster Brewery, the Royal Moss Side Brewery, the Caledonian Brewery, and Cork Brewery continued to operate.
\nThe Caledonian Brewery was closed in 2022.<\/p>\n
