Ltd, the Holyrood Brewery of William Younger &amp; Co. Ltd, both based in Edinburgh, and the Red Tower Lager Brewery Co. Ltd, based in Manchester.<br \/>\nNewcastle Breweries Ltd also owned two breweries, the Tyne Brewery based in Newcastle, and the Duddingston Brewery, formely owned by Robert Deuchar Ltd, based in Edinburgh.<br \/>\nSoon after the merger the Duddingston Brewery was closed, although its maltings continued to be used by S&amp;N until the early 1970s.<br \/>\nThe Red Tower Brewery was renamed the Royal Moss Side Brewery in 1961.<br \/>\nThe Abbey Brewery, a dormant building once owned by William Younger &amp; Co. Ltd, was redeveloped as S&amp;N&#8217;s new Head Office in Edinburgh.<br \/>\nThe Holyrood Brewery was closed in 1986.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Scottish &amp; Newcastle Breweries Ltd Expansion<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Company continued its expansion and purchased the Home Brewery Co. Ltd of Nottingham, with 447 public houses, in 1986, and Matthew Brown &amp; Co. Ltd of Blackburn, with 550 public houses, in 1987.<br \/>\nThe acquisition of Matthew Brown &amp; Co. Ltd included the brewery of T. &amp; R.Theakston Ltd which S&amp;N sold back to the family in 2003.<br \/>\nAfter the purchase of Courage Ltd in 1995 the Company became the UK&#8217;s biggest brewer and was renamed Scottish Courage Ltd.<br \/>\nPart of the deal included ownership of John Smith&#8217;s Tadcaster Brewery Co. Ltd, the state-of-the-art Berkshire Brewery of Reading, and the Cork brewery of Beamish &amp; Crawford Ltd, in Ireland.<br \/>\nIn 1996 the Home Brewery Co.
