Ltd enamel tray dating from the 1910s.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Origins of the Business<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>English brewers Richard and Joseph Watkins purchased the oldest brewery in Dublin from the Taylor family in the early 1800s. Evidence suggests that the brewery had existed since 1536.<br \/>\nIn 1819 Richard and Joseph Watkins joined Alderman Trevor who owned a brewery on Ardee Street in Dublin.<br \/>\nThe business traded as Trevor &amp; Watkins and by the 1820s it was the third largest brewery in Ireland.<br \/>\nBy 1888 Joseph Watkins was the sole owner of the Ardee Street Brewery and the firm traded as Joseph Watkins &amp; Co.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Joseph Watkins &amp; Co. Merger with Jameson, Pim &amp; Co.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1904 Joseph Watkins &amp; Co. merged with Jameson, Pim &amp; Co., which had been founded on Anne Street in Dublin in 1715.<br \/>\nThe new Company was registered as Watkins, Jameson, Pim &amp; Co. Ltd.<br \/>\nMost of the brewing concentrated at the Ardee Street Brewery resulting in the closure of Jameson&#8217;s old porter brewery in 1910.<br \/>\nThe Company continued to expand and in 1926 it purchased a local rival, John D&#8217;Arcy &amp; Son Ltd.<br \/>\nWatkins entered voluntary liquidation in 1937 and brewing ceased.<br \/>\nA fire destroyed some of the brewery buildings in 1951. The site is currently a protected area.<\/p>\n<p>The manufacturer&#8217;s mark is unreadable except for the trade mark which states &#8211; Trade Mark G B B<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Watkins, Jameson, Pim &amp; Co.
