Origins of the Business<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

English brewers Richard and Joseph Watkins purchased the oldest brewery in Dublin from the Taylor family in the early 1800s. Evidence suggests that the brewery had existed since 1536.
\nIn 1819 Richard and Joseph Watkins joined Alderman Trevor who owned a brewery on Ardee Street in Dublin.
\nThe business traded as Trevor & Watkins and by the 1820s it was the third largest brewery in Ireland.
\nBy 1888 Joseph Watkins was the sole owner of the Ardee Street Brewery and the firm traded as Joseph Watkins & Co.<\/p>\n

Joseph Watkins & Co. Merger with Jameson, Pim & Co.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

In 1904 Joseph Watkins & Co. merged with Jameson, Pim & Co., which had been founded on Anne Street in Dublin in 1715.
\nThe new Company was registered as Watkins, Jameson, Pim & Co. Ltd.
\nMost of the brewing concentrated at the Ardee Street Brewery resulting in the closure of Jameson’s old porter brewery in 1910.
\nThe Company continued to expand and in 1926 it purchased a local rival, John D’Arcy & Son Ltd.
\nWatkins entered voluntary liquidation in 1937 and brewing ceased.
\nA fire destroyed some of the brewery buildings in 1951. The site is currently a protected area.<\/p>\n
