{"id":4419,"date":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/?post_type=product&#038;p=4419"},"modified":"2026-01-14T19:33:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T19:33:49","slug":"threlfall-chesters-ltd-small-round-tin","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/product\/threlfall-chesters-ltd-small-round-tin\/","title":{"rendered":"Threlfall Chesters Ltd Small Round Tin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Threlfall Chesters Ltd tin tray dating from the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Threlfall&#8217;s Liverpool Origins<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>For most of its history Threlfall&#8217;s owned two breweries, one on Trueman Street in Liverpool, and the other on Cook Street in Salford.<br \/>\nThe Liverpool part of the business was established in 1818 on Crosbie Street.<br \/>\nThe Company traded as Thomas Threlfall &amp; Co.<br \/>\nIn 1849 it purchased Lloyd &amp; Garden&#8217;s brewery on Trueman Street and operated its two Liverpool breweries until 1860 when the Crosbie Street brewery was demolished.<br \/>\nIn 1861 Liverpudlian, John Mayor Threlfall, acquired the brewery of Lupton and Adamthwaite in Salford.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Threlfall&#8217;s Brewery Co. Ltd &#8211; Liverpool and Salford Breweries<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Company, with its Liverpool and Salford breweries, was registered in 1888 as Threlfall&#8217;s Brewery Co. Ltd.<br \/>\nIn 1895 Threlfall&#8217;s purchased the Blue Lion public house on Cook Street in Salford and built a new brewery on the site.<br \/>\nThe business traded successfully and in 1927 it acquired the West Cheshire Brewery Co. Ltd of Birkenhead with 67 public houses, and brewing there ceased.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Threlfall Chesters Ltd<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Threlfall&#8217;s Brewery Co. Ltd and Chesters Brewery Co. Ltd merged in 1961 to form Threlfall Chesters Ltd.<br \/>\nThe pretence was that the two businesses would operate independently, however full integration was completed in 1966 and the Ardwick Brewery was closed.<br \/>\nThe buildings were demolished in 1967.<br \/>\nThrelfall Chesters Ltd merged with the Birkenhead Brewery Co. Ltd in 1961 which owned both the Argyle Brewery and the Anchor Brewery. The Argyle Brewery closed immediately whilst the Anchor Brewery continued to operate until 1968.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Whitbread &amp; Co. Ltd Takeover<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Threlfall Chesters Ltd, with 800 tied houses and three breweries based in Liverpool, Salford and Birkenhead, was acquired by Whitbread &amp; Co.
