{"id":3918,"date":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/?post_type=product&#038;p=3918"},"modified":"2025-11-01T12:38:36","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T12:38:36","slug":"border-breweries-wrexham-ltd-round-tin-2","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/product\/border-breweries-wrexham-ltd-round-tin-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Border Breweries (Wrexham) Ltd Round Tin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Border Breweries (Wrexham) Ltd tin tray dating from 22.11.1962.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Nag&#8217;s Head Brewery of<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> Wrexham<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Nag&#8217;s Head Brewery in Wrexham, was founded in about 1750.<br \/>\nBetween 1834 and 1874 it was run by a successful father and son combination, William and Thomas Rowlands.<br \/>\nIt was subsequently acquired by Henry Aspinall who named it the Wrexham Brewery Co.<br \/>\nHenry was declared bankrupt in 1879 and the site was purchased by Arthur Soames.<br \/>\nArthur put his son, Frederick Soames, in charge of running the business.<br \/>\nWithin ten years Frederick had transformed the Company, modernising the brewery, and ensuring its beers were favoured beyond Wrexham.<br \/>\nIts Bridled Horse trade mark became well-known across a number of neighbouring counties.<br \/>\nThe Grade II listed red brick chimney, which is still an iconic symbol in Wrexham, was built in 1894.<br \/>\nFrederick Soames built a new five-storey brewhouse in 1920, and the Company&#8217;s future looked optimistic, however Frederick&#8217;s death, and the Great Depression, forced the business into liquidation in 1930.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Island Green Brewery of Wrexham<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Island Green Malthouse and Brewery, also based in Wrexham, was founded in 1856 by brothers John and William Jones.<br \/>\nIn 1905 the brewery, with 21 licensed houses, was put up for sale. The business was sold to Francis Osmond Joseph Huntley. The firm traded as Huntley and Mowat.<br \/>\nIt was registered in 1925 to acquire the business of F.O.J.Huntley and G.A.S.Mowat, as the Island Green Brewery Co. Ltd, with 23 public houses.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Border Breweries (Wrexham) Ltd is formed in 1931<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Border Breweries (Wrexham) Ltd was registered in 1931 to acquire F.W.Soames Ltd and its Nag&#8217;s Head Brewery, then in liquidation, The Island Green Brewery Co. Ltd, and Dorsett, Owen &amp; Co. of Oswestry.<br \/>\nAll brewing was concentrated at F.W.Soames Nag&#8217;s Head Brewery, and the other two breweries were closed.<br \/>\nThe Nag&#8217;s Head Brewery was acquired by Marston, Thompson &amp; Evershed Ltd in 1984, and brewing ceased.<br \/>\nThe Nag&#8217;s Head Brewery chimney was saved from demolition in 1990, and is now owned by Subair UK.<\/p>\n<p>The manufacturer&#8217;s mark states &#8211; Hancock Corfield &amp; Waller Ltd, Mitcham, London.
