{"id":3618,"date":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/?post_type=product&#038;p=3618"},"modified":"2025-12-12T09:31:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T09:31:16","slug":"j-c-r-h-palmer-square-tin","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/product\/j-c-r-h-palmer-square-tin\/","title":{"rendered":"J.C. &#038; R.H.Palmer Square Tin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>J.C. &amp; R.H.Palmer tin tray dating from 1956.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Foundation of The Old Brewery<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Old Brewery was established on the banks of the River Brit in Bridport, by maltster Samuel Gundry, in 1794.<br \/>\nBy the 1850s, the brewery was being run by a partnership which included Samuel Bowden Gundry and George Templar.<br \/>\nIn 1862 twelve ales were recorded as being brewed at the Old Brewery for markets home and abroad. Beers were exported to Australia, India and Canada.<br \/>\nIn 1864 the Bridport Old Brewery Co. Ltd, 70% of its shareholders living in London, took over the running of the Company, and the business underwent a short period of investment and expansion.<br \/>\nThe tenure of the Bridport Old Brewery Co. Ltd was short-lived and in 1866 the business was liquidated. The Old Brewery was then purchased by the Legg family in 1867.<br \/>\nThe Leggs installed the brewery&#8217;s waterwheel in 1879.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Palmer Family Take Control<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Old Brewery, with its public houses, was acquired by two Palmer brothers, John Cleeves and Robert Henry in 1896.<br \/>\nThe business traded as J.C. &amp; R.H.Palmer and was run by John.<br \/>\nThe Company ordered its first motorised dray in 1920, with the result that only one horse drawn dray remained in service by 1923. This practice continued until 1949.<br \/>\nFollowing the deaths of Cleeves and Robert, Cleeve&#8217;s son Bob, became the sole owner of the business in 1935.<br \/>\nIn 1939 Tony Palmer joined the firm as a brewer and he was responsible for upgrading the brewhouse that year.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Post-War History<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1949 Palmer&#8217;s launched its famous Tally Ho Dark Strong Ale, followed by IPA in 1953.<br \/>\nDuring the rest of the 20th century the Company traded successfully and was registered as J.C. &amp; R.H.Palmer Ltd in 1976.<br \/>\nJohn Palmer, who had joined the firm in 1969, became its Managing Director in 1983.<br \/>\nIn 1985 Palmers diversified its business when it opened its Wine Store on the brewery site.<br \/>\nIn 2024 Britain&#8217;s only thatched brewery celebrated 230 years of continuous operation.<br \/>\nThe Company is still brewing independently with an estate totalling 53 public houses, located across Dorset, Somerset &amp; Devon.<\/p>\n<p>The manufacturer&#8217;s mark states &#8211; Reginald Corfield Ltd Lombard Road London S.W.19. 5617.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>J.C. &amp; R.H.Palmer tin tray dating from 1956.<br \/>\nThe Old Brewery is still brewing in Bridport, Dorset.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":9379,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":""},"product_brand":[],"product_cat":[378],"product_tag":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-3618","1":"product","2":"type-product","3":"status-publish","4":"has-post-thumbnail","6":"product_cat-england-1950s","8":"first","9":"instock","10":"shipping-taxable","11":"purchasable","12":"product-type-simple"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product\/3618","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/product"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3618"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/9379"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3618"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"product_brand","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_brand?post=3618"},{"taxonomy":"product_cat","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_cat?post=3618"},{"taxonomy":"product_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brewerytrays.co.uk\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product_tag?post=3618"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
