A wine business was founded on Highgate in Kendal by John Whitwell in 1757. John obtained a licence to brew beer in 1758.
William Mark purchased the firm and in 1858 and there he built a new brewery in the garden of a Georgian townhouse.
The business was registered as Whitwell, Mark & Co. Ltd in 1883.
By 1900 it was one of the biggest employers in Kendal.
The Company, with 30 public houses, was acquired by Vaux & Associated Breweries Ltd in 1947.
Brewing ceased in 1968 and it was converted into the Brewery Arts Centre in 1972.
