Richard Truswell Founder
Richard Truswell founded the brewery on Eyre Street in Sheffield in the early 19th century. The brewery was not purpose built, having been converted from a group of workshops belonging to Abraham Howls.
Richard was joined in partnership by John Walker. John Walker died in 1844 when the firm continued to trade as Richard Truswell & Co.
William Unwin joined the business in 1847.
He ran the firm and was responsible for its expansion by acquiring 23 tied houses between 1849 and 1865.
Truswell's Brewery Co. Ltd Registration
The Company was registered as Truswell's Brewery Co. Ltd in 1865 when it brewed bitter, mild ales, porter and stout.
The purchase of tied houses continued apace when 60 properties were acquired between 1866 and 1940.
Hope & Anchor Breweries Ltd Takeover
In 1955 Truswell's, with 50 public houses, was acquired by the ever-growing Hope & Anchor Breweries Ltd of Sheffield.
The Eyre Street Brewery was sold to the Sheffield Corporation.
The brewery was demolished in 1960.
The manufacturer's mark states - S.Groves & Co. Ltd Brirmingham Made in England Sirius Regd
