The Early Years of the Knowle Spring Brewery
Timothy Taylor established his business on Cook Lane in the centre of Keighley in 1858, brewing in partnership with James Shakleton and John Naylor.
The partnership purchased its first public house, the Volunteer's Arms, in 1859.
In 1863 Timothy Taylor bought out his partners and built the Knowle Spring Brewery and maltings, with the financial assistance of his father-in-law, Robert Aked.
Robert Henry Taylor, the eldest son of Timothy, joined the business in 1881, and he was joined by his brother, Percy Taylor a few years later.
In 1894 the Company sank a deep well, and as a result the brewhouse was extended.
Timothy Taylor died in 1898 leaving his sons to form a new partnership to run the brewing business.
In 1911 a new fermentation vessel was built to meet the Company's sales growth.
With most of the Company's able bodied men fighting abroad in the First World War, Robert and Percy took it turns to brew their beers.
In 1928 Timothy Taylor's won its first brewing championship award but also put the Knowle Spring Brewery up for sale.
Samuel Allsopp & Sons Ltd's bid to buy the brewery was withdrawn and although brewing continued, the firm stopped its malting activities.
