James Goding Founder

In 1836 James Goding obtained a lease of ground on the south side of Belvedere Road, part of the Seven Acres in Lambeth, from Henry Warburton, on which he erected stables, warehouses and built a brewery. A colossal artificial stone lion was placed on top of the new Goding's Brewery.
The firm traded as Goding & Co. until 1855 with the Lion as its trade mark.
James Goding died in 1856 when the New Lion Brewery was leased by Sir Charles Ogle and Henry Jenkins who had previously been in partnership with James.
From 1857 until 1863 the business traded as Goding, Jenkins & Co.

The Lion Brewery Co. Ltd Registration

The Company was registered as the Lion Brewery Co. Ltd in 1865.
In 1890 the leasehold premises of the brewery were inherited by Henry Goding.
In 1906 the Company acquired the Half Guinea Brewery of Waltham Brothers Ltd with 4 public houses. The purchase was not a financial success.
In 1923 the Lion Brewery, with over 100 public houses, was acquired by Hoare & Co. Ltd which closed the business in 1924.
The brewery was demolished in 1949 to clear the site for the Royal Festival Hall.
