The Golden Hop Brewery, as it was originally named, was founded in 1777 and was operated by George Gates.
A new brewhouse was built in 1876.
The Star Brewery Co. Ltd was formed in 1886 when the Company acquired the brewing business of William Alexander Cardwell in Eastbourne.
The Star Brewery, with 43 tied houses, was acquired by Courage, Barclay, Simonds & Co. Ltd in 1965 and brewing ceased in 1967.
The brewhouse was demolished in 1971.
The Star Inn on Star Road is all that remains of the brewery.
