The Albert Brewery

The brewery was founded in Moss Side, Manchester, as the Albert Brewery by William Brookes in 1875. The brewery, with 24 employees, was named after Queen Victoria's husband Albert, where it brewed ales and stouts.
The business was acquired from the trustees of William Bookes in 1894 by John Henry Lees.

The Royal Brewery of the Moss Side Brewery Co. and the Palantine Bottling Co. Ltd

The Company was registered as John Henry Lees Ltd in 1897. John Henry Lees renamed the brewery the Moss Side Brewery and changed it again to the Royal Brewery in honour of King Edward VII's visit in 1907.
A receiver was appointed in 1913 and the Company was dissolved in 1917.
J.H.Davies, who was the Chairman of brewers Walker & Homfrays Ltd of Salford, purchased the Moss Side Brewery Co. in 1916.
In 1920 he registered the Company as the Moss Side Brewery Co. Ltd and also formed the Palantine Bottling Co. Ltd on the same site.

The Red Tower Lager Brewery Co. Ltd

In 1933 a new Company was registered as the Red Tower Lager Brewery Co. Ltd to acquire the lager brewery of the Palantine Bottling Co. Ltd.
The Red Tower Lager Brewery Co. Ltd was taken over by Scottish Brewers Ltd in 1956.
In 1960 Scottish Brewers Ltd merged with Newcastle Breweries Ltd to form Scottish & Newcastle Ltd which formed a partnership with Arthur Guinness, Son & Co. Ltd and Courage Ltd to brew Harp Lager at Moss Side.
The demand for Harp Lager led to a major expansion of the site including a new brewhouse in the 1960s.

The Royal Moss Side Brewery Ltd

The brewery was extensively modernised and the Company name was changed to the Royal Moss Side Brewery Ltd in 1961. Brewing of Harp Lager commenced in 1962 and Kronenberg Lager was added in 1975.
