In 1878 Francis Phillips and Walter Henry Marriott formed a partnership and Francis moved to Coventry to run Phillips & Marriott's Midland Brewery on Much Park Street.
In 1890 the partnership was dissolved and a new partnership, also named Phillips & Marriott, was formed in 1891.
Francis Phillips and Walter's father, James Marriott, became the first directors.
In 1899 Phillips & Marriott purchased the Coventry Brewery on Leicester Row which had been owned by the late William Ratliff.
Phillips & Marriott Ltd was registered in 1900 to amalgamate the two businesses.
Brewing was centred at the Midland Brewery and the Coventry Brewery was closed.
The Midland Brewery, with 110 public houses, was acquired by Bass, Ratcliff & Gretton Ltd in 1924, and was closed in the same year.
