The Little Harwood Brewery
The Company was registered as the Little Harwood Brewery Co. Ltd in 1875 to acquire Beardsworth and Whalley.
When James Beardswoth died in 1891 one of his executors, Alfred Nuttall, was authorised to carry on running the business in which he had been engaged with Henry Whalley for 10 years.
Whalley became the sole proprietor but died later that year, insolvent.
Nuttall & Co. (Blackburn) Ltd
The Company was acquired by Nuttall & Co. in 1892, and was registered as Nuttall & Co. Ltd in 1897.
The name changed to Nutall & Co. (Blackburn) Ltd in 1906.
The Lion Brewery was so named during Nuttall's ownership.
The Lion Brewery, with 172 public houses, was acquired by Matthew Brown & Co. Ltd in 1927, which transferred all its brewing from Preston to Blackburn.
The Lion Brewery was closed in 1991 after a hostile takeover of Matthew Brown & Co. Ltd from Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd in 1987.
