Origins of the Business
The business was founded at Alnwick in 1919 when George Stott Smart's High Brewery was acquired.
The brewery was found to be in such poor working order that a second brewery was purchased on Hedley Street in Newcastle-on-Tyne, where brewing began in 1921.
The High Brewery in Alnwick was written-off as a bad investment.
Northern Clubs Federation Brewery Ltd
The Company was registered as the Northern Clubs Federation Brewery Ltd in 1926.
In 1927 a short lease was taken on John Buchanan's Hanover Square Brewery in Newcastle-on-Tyne, which then excercised an option to purchase the brewery in 1929.
In 1931 all brewing was transferred to the Hanover Square Brewery.
During the 1960s the Company switched its brewing from cask to keg beers.
New Federation Brewery in Dunston
In 1980 all brewing was transferred to the new Federation Brewery which had been built in Dunston, an area of Gateshead.
The Dunston Brewery was sold to Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd in 2004.
Controversially S&N closed the original Tyne Brewery, which was once part of Newcastle Breweries Ltd, and transferred all its brewing including Newcastle Brown Ale, to the Dunston site in 2005.
