Foundation of Mowbray's
Samuel Hall Mowbray began brewing and selling his beer in Grantham in 1828.
The business traded as Mowbray, Robertson & Burbridge's Grantham Brewery.
By 1842 the firm's offices were situated on London Road and the brewery on Commercial Road in Grantham.
Mowbray & Co. Ltd Registration
In 1888 the Company was registered as Mowbray & Co. Ltd to acquire Mowbray & Co. and Burbridge & Hutchinson, wine and spirit merchants.
Over the next few decades Mowbray's expanded rapidly acquiring Redhead & Co. Spittlegate Brewery of Grantham in 1891, and Dawber & Co. of Lincoln with 52 public houses in 1905.
In 1919 the firm was described in Kelly's Lincolnshire business directory as 'Mowbray & Co. Ltd brewers, maltsters & mineral water manufacturers, Commercial Road & London Road, and wine & cigar merchants, Finkin Street'.
Mowbray's continued to trade successfully and it acquired G. & H.R.Hunt of Stamford in 1927 with 61 tied houses.
J.W.Green Ltd Takeover
The Grantham Brewery, with 200 tied houses, was acquired by J.W.Green Ltd in 1952.
J.W.Green Ltd acquired Flower & Sons Ltd in 1954 and the business was renamed Flowers Breweries (East Midlands) Ltd in 1959.
The Company was taken over by Whitbread & Co. Ltd in 1961 which closed the Grantham Brewery in 1964.
The manufacturer's mark states - Reginald Corfield Ltd Lombard Road. London S.W.19.
