The Sewell Family
The Company was founded on Wood Street in Maryport in 1756.
The brewery was run by John Sewell in the early 1800s who passed it on to his son William Miller Sewell in the 1830s.
By 1839 the firm was trading as W.M.Sewell & Co. In 1873 William Miller Sewell died leaving the business to his son Frederic Robertson Sewell.
The business was registered as the Maryport Brewery Ltd in 1890 to acquire the business of Frederic Robertson Sewell with 63 public houses.
In 1891 the Company acquired W.T.Trimble's Dalston Old Brewery, and in 1900 R.Stanley Hill's Wigton Brewery was purchased with 18 public houses.
Its Coat of Arms trade mark was registered in 1894.
By 1900 the business employed about 50 men and was exporting its beers as far as New Zealand.
First World War Munition Workers Restrictions Result in State Control
As a result of its ownership of a number of tied houses in Carlisle, the Company was bought under state control in 1916.
Output was reduced by 50% causing the sale of its 123 tied houses to the State Management scheme in 1917.
Brewing ceased in 1921.
By the 1960s the brewery site was demolished.
