Mappin's Early Trading

John Newton Mappin was involved in brewing in the mid 1840s when he partnered with William Bradley at the Soho Brewery on Ecclesall Road, Rotherham.
In 1849 Mappin moved into Singleton & Wingfield's Brewery in Masbrough, which he leased until 1862, when he acquired full ownership.
Mappin died in 1883 and subsequently the Company was registered as Mappin's Masbro' Old Brewery Ltd in 1885.
At the turn of the 20th century new finance became available to increase Mappin's tied estate to 46 public houses.

20th Century Trading

Before World War I business grew steadily and the Company gained a reputation for its quality ales, winning awards at the National Brewers' Exhibition in London on eleven occasions between 1901 and 1915.
The peak of its achievement was reached in 1914, when Mappin's won a Gold Medal for best draught beer, and the Gold Challenge Cup for best bottled beer.
The Company continued to exapand its tied houses and before the First World War it added another 26 pubs.
In 1914 Mappin's took over the Sheffield & Rotherham Brewery Ltd with its small amount of tied houses.
In 1949 the Company was re-registered as Mappin's Brewery Ltd.

William Stones Ltd Takeover

The brewery was acquired by William Stones Ltd of Sheffield with 59 public houses in 1954.
Brewing ceased in 1955.
The Company was wound up in the early 1970s by Bass Charrington Ltd after its takeover of William Stones Ltd.
