The Company was founded in 1840 on Lichfield Street in Burton-on-Trent.
The business was registered as John Bell & Co. Ltd in 1896.
The Company, with 23 public houses, was acquired by Thomas Salt & Co. Ltd in 1902 which leased the brewery to Magee, Marshall & Co. Ltd of Bolton.
Magee's brewed there for two years and transported water from Bolton until 1909 when it acquired land for its own pumping station.

The manufacturer's mark states - R.Hammersley & Son Burslem
