James Shipstone Founder

The business was founded by James Shipstone in New Basford near Nottingham, in 1852.
The Company was registered as James Shipstone & Sons Ltd in 1891.
A new Star Brewery was built on the sae site to the designs of William Bradford in 1900. An illuminated Red Star at the top of the brewery's tower, could be seen for miles around.
The Company acquired the Beeston Brewery Co. Ltd in 1922, which were used as maltings until 2000.
In 1926 Shipstone & Sons Ltd purchased the Wheatsheaf Brewery of George Hooley Ltd in Nottingham, with 11 public houses and an off-licence..
By 1939 Shipstone's owned 550 licensed premises, thirty diesel lorries for long distance deliveries, and fifty horses for local work.
The brewery remained independent, brewing 'Shippos' beers, as they were known locally, until 1978.

The Greenall Whitley & Co. Ltd Takeover

The Star Brewery, with 280 tied houses, was acquired by Greenall Whitley & Co. Ltd.
In 1990 Greenall's announced that it was ending all beer production to concentrate on its retail business. The resulting closure of the Star Brewery was a sad day for brewing in Nottingham.
The Victorian brewery buildings are still standing.

The manufacturer's mark states - Tresises Drip Mat Co. Burton-on-Trent. This, and another similarly designed tray, are the only examples of brewery trays which were produced by Tresises.
