Almond's Standish Brewery Opening
The Standish Brewery, near Wigan, was opened in 1870 by James Birkett Almond. The wealthy Almond family owned the entire row of workers terraced houses between the brewery and their own home, The Beeches.
The Company which traded simply as 'Almond', was only a small concern, as evidenced by the 1881 census which recorded only eight men that worked there.
The brewery produced 'Almond Ales' which were liked by local men.

The Death of James Birkett Almond Snr
James Birkett Almond died in 1908 having built a modest but prosperous brewing business.
His third son, also named James Birkett Almond, took over the running of the brewery until his death in 1925.
The business was then passed to his siblings of whom William, the eldest, took control.
The Company was registered as J.B.Almond Ltd in 1961.
William Almond died in 1964 leaving James Birkett, son of Leonard Birkett Almond, in charge of the firm. James was already a brewer at the time he became its head, and he was the last family member to be involved in the business.
The Standish Brewery, with 44 public houses, was acquired by Burtonwood Brewery (Forshaws) Ltd in 1968.
The brewery was demolished in 1985 and was redeveloped as a supermarket.
