Henty's Chichester Brewery

The origins of the Westgate Brewery, based in Chichester, date back to the late 18th century.
The brewery was first leased by John Dearling to brothers William and Edward Humphry, who purchased the lease in 1814.
In 1827 the Humphrys sold their brewing business to George Henty.
On the death of George Henty Senior in 1829, his two sons George Jr, and Robert, inherited the Company, and began trading in partnership as G. & R.Henty.
A serious fire destroyed the Westgate Brewery in 1865.
It was rebuilt and became known as George Henty & Son in 1874.
The Company was registered in 1893 as George Henty & Sons Ltd.

Constable's Arundel & Littlehampton Breweries

In Arundel and Littlehampton, G.S.Constable & Sons owned two breweries, both purchased in 1870 by John Constable. The Swallow Brewery, in Arundel, was founded in the 18th century.
The Littlehampton brewery had been founded by James Corfe in 1816, and taken over by G.B.Puttock in 1850.
In 1871 John Constable built a new Anchor Brewhouse, and a landmark square tower on the same site.
The business and its two breweries traded as G.S.Constable & Sons until its registration in 1904, when it became G.S.Constable & Sons Ltd.
The Littlehampton brewery was closed in 1917, and brewing was transferred to Arundel.

Henty & Constable Ltd

G.Henty & Sons Ltd and G.S.Constable Ltd merged in 1921, to form Henty & Constable (Brewers) Ltd.
On the site of the old Littlehampton brewery, Henty & Constable Ltd started to manufacture mineral waters using water from the Anchor Springs.
Constable's Swallow Brewery, in Arundel, was closed in 1922, and all brewing was transferred to Chichester.
The Westgate Brewery, with 247 public houses, was acquired by Watney, Combe, Reid & Co Ltd, in 1954.
Henty & Constable (Brewers) Ltd ceased brewing in 1955.
Watneys sold part of the Westgate Brewery, and 120 public houses, to Friary, Holroyd & Healy's Breweries Ltd, soon after the acquistion.
Friary Meux Ltd, used part of the Westgate Brewery as a distrubution depot until it was closed by Ind Coope Ltd, then part of Allied Lyons, in 1991.
'Henty Gardens' and 'The Maltings' roads, on a new housing development, are the only remaining trace of the history of the Company.
