The Cowick brewery was purchased by two farmers, Bevis Pulleine, and Joseph Bowman.

The Company was registered as Hartley's Brewery Co. Ltd in 1888, and in 1892, a new brewery was built on the same site.
The Crown Brewery, with its 27 public houses, was acquired by Hull Brewery Co. Ltd in 1957, and was closed.
