A brewery, under the tenure of brewer and maltster, James Latham, existed on the site of the Crown Brewery, on Spa Well Lane, West Cowick, before 1841, when it was sold that year.
The Cowick brewery was purchased by two farmers, Bevis Pulleine, and Joseph Bowman.
After another farmer, William Hartley, purchased the land and the brewery, the partnership of John and Thomas Hartley founded the Crown Brewery in 1850.
The Company was registered as Hartley's Brewery Co. Ltd in 1888, and in 1892, a new brewery was built on the same site.
The Crown Brewery, with its 27 public houses, was acquired by Hull Brewery Co. Ltd in 1957, and was closed.
The brewery was used as a depot until the 1960s.
The Crown Brewery is still standing.
