The business was founded at Matley in 1830 and moved to Pottinger Street in Ashton-Under-Lyne in 1847.
The Company was registered as Gartsides Ltd in 1892 and was re-registered as Gartside's (Brookside) Brewery Ltd in 1898.
One of the Company's most famous beers was an Emerald Stout named 'Old Tom'
The brewery was acquired by Bent's Brewery Co. Ltd in 1939 with 180 tied houses.
Brewing ceased in 1970 and the site was demolished in 1976.
The manufacturer's mark states - Horrocks & Co. Ashton-Under-Lyne
