The Flew Brewery in Weymouth
The Flew Brewery had operated on Hope Square in Weymouth since 1742, when it was owned by the Flew and Fowler families.
Wiiliam Devenish acquired the lease in 1821, then purchased the Flew Brewery outright in 1824.
The Flew Brewery name was used until 1851, when it changed to J.A.Devenish & Co.
The Company was registered as J.A.Devenish & Co. Ltd in 1889.
J.A.Devenish & Co. Ltd - Weymouth & Redruth
In the early 1900s J.A.Devenish & Co. Ltd was granted Royal Warrants by H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh, and H.R.H The Prince of Wales, later to become King George V in 1910.
Devenish continued to expand and it acquired two companies in the South West, including Carnes of Falmouth in 1921, which owned two breweries, and Aylwin & Snowden of Exeter, with 22 public houses, in 1925.
The Well Park Brewery of Aylwin & Snowden was used as a depot until 1958.
J.A.Devenish & Co. Ltd acquired the Cornish Brewing Co. Ltd based in Redruth, with nearly 200 public houses, in 1934.
In 1960 the Devenish merged with its next door neighbours John Groves & Sons Ltd, with 115 public houses, which also brewed in Hope Square at the Hope Brewery.
The name of the business changed to the Devenish Weymouth Brewery Co. Ltd, that year.
Devenish & Co. Ltd
In 1965 the Company name was simplified to Devenish & Co. Ltd.
In the early 1980s the Company faced financial difficulties, and in 1985 brewing ceased in Weymouth.
All pruduction was focussed in Redruth, and the Company traded as the Redruth Brewery (1742) Ltd.
In 1986 J.A.Devenish & Co. Ltd merged with Inn Leisure, and the Redruth site was sold to new operators in 1991.
The old brewery premises were sympathetically redeveloped as 'Brewers Quay', with shops, a pub and a restaurant. The award winning site opened in 1990.
Devenish remained active as a pub company and distributor until 1993, when its estate, with 550 public houses, was sold to Greenall Whitley & Co. Ltd.
The Redruth brewery closed in 2004.
