Clarkson's Old Brewery (Barnsley) Ltd enamel tray dating from the 1920s.
Barnsley's oldest brewing business was founded by Samuel Clarkson on Wood Street, in Barnsley, in 1839.
Business was exclusively focussed on the free trade to begin with, but by the late 1860s tied houses were being sought by James Clarkson, who was then in joint control of the Company with Samuel.
James died in 1876 leaving Samuel Clarkson junior in control. When Samuel died in 1888, his widow Ellen Clarkson, took over the firm.
Ellen was joined by an experienced Manchester brewer, Edward Issott, and it was they who jointly registered the Company, with 42 public houses, as Clarkson's Old Brewery Co. Ltd in 1891. Ellen retired shortly afterwards.
In 1902 the name of the Company was changed to Clarkson's Old Brewery (Barnsley) Ltd.
The Company, with 61 public houses, was acquired by Tennant Brothers Ltd in 1956, and brewing ceased that year.
The manufacturer's mark states - C.E.Wilkins.Birmingham.
