The Early Years - 50 Years of Brewing
The brewery was operated by Francis Berryman on Wells Road, in Shepton Mallet, from 1844.
He entered into a partnership with William Bide and traded as Bide & Berryman until 1865, when the Bide family withdrew from the firm.
Charles R.Burnell became Berryman's new partner in 1866.
From 1884 until 1894, the partnership traded as Berryman, Burnell & Co.
Charlton Brewery Co. Ltd
The Company was registered as Berryman, Burnell & Co. Ltd in 1894, and the name was changed to the Charlton Brewery Co. Ltd in 1902.
The Company, with 83 public houses, was acquired by Bristol United Breweries Ltd in 1937.
Bristol United Breweries Ltd was taken over by Bristol Brewery Georges & Co. Ltd in 1956.
Bristol Brewery Georges & Co. Ltd was acquired by Courage, Barclay, Simonds & Co. Ltd in 1961, and the brewery at Shepton Mallet was closed.
The Company went into involuntary liquidation in 1963.
Courage Ltd, as it had been named in 1970, made use of the site as a depot until the late 1970s.
The manufacturer's mark states - Causton's Manufacturers, London.
