Foundation of the Brewery

The Company was founded on Sheep Street, in Wellingborough, in 1823.
The firm was acquired by the Praed family in 1878.
The business was trading successful very quickly, making good profits for such a small firm.
In 1882 the Company registered its 'Unicorn's head on a coronet' trade mark which it used throughout its trading existence.

Campbell Praed & Co. Ltd Registration & Expansion

The business was registered in 1896 as Campbell Praed & Co. Ltd.
In 1920 Praed's purchased local Wellingborough competitor Dulley & Sons Ltd, with its Swan Brewery, and 54 public houses. The purchase of Dulley's almost doubled sales overnight.
By the 1930s Praed's was also a mineral waters manufacturer, which was also situated on Sheep Street,
The Company continued to flourish throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.
The quality of its beers was recognised when Praed's was awarded a medal for its Brown Ale at the National Brewer's Exhibition in 1952, enabling the motto 'Prize Winning Brown'.

Phipps & Co. Ltd Takeover

The brewery, with 107 public houses, was acquired by Phipps & Co. Ltd in 1954, and brewing ceased in 1955.
Phipps was attracted by Praed's mineral water facilities as well its financial performance.
The brewery was demolished in 1956.
