The Early Years
The business was founded by Thomas and Henry Wilders in 1842, who were part of a family of tanners.
They built their brewery on a leather working premises in Burton-on-Trent High Street.
It was registered in 1846 as Wilders' Burton Brewery Co. Ltd and re-registered as the Burton Brewery Co. Ltd in 1858.
After many years of rapid growth it became Burton's third largest brewery and by 1861 it employed 297 workers.
The firm also owned maltings in Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
Financial Problems
In the early 1900s the Company struggled financially and plans to amalgamate with Thomas Salt & Co. Ltd and Samuel Allsopp & Sons Ltd failed, and a reciever was appointed in 1907.
The Company retained its tied houses and free trade accounts by brewing on an adjoining site.
The brewery was sold to Worthington & Co. Lts in 1915.
Worthington & Co. Ltd continued to brew its own branded beers on at the High Street Brewery until it 1927.
The Final Years
The Company was acquired by Ind, Coope & Co. Ltd in 1927 with 75 tied houses.
The site was cleared in 1965 to build a shopping precinct.
