The Bentley Family
The Lockwood Brewery was founded by Timothy Bentley of Halifax in 1795 who made use of the Horse Bank Spring and its water supply.
Timothy died in 1830 and control of the business passed immediately to his son-in-law William Shaw, and by 1841 he was joined by Timothy's grandsons, Bentley Shaw, Robert John Bentley, and Henry Bentley.
In 1843 the brewery was purchased by Bentley Shaw, and the firm traded as Bentley & Shaw.
Bentley Shaw peacefully died in 1878.
The Company was registered as Bentley & Shaw Ltd in 1891.
The Company's 'Town Major' and 'Head of Major' trade marks, were registered in 1934.
Hammond's United Breweries Ltd
The Lockwood Brewery, with 192 tied houses, was acquired by Hammond's Bradford Brewery Co. Ltd in 1944.
After the acquisition of a number of other breweries in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, Hammond's United Breweries Ltd was formed in 1946.
For the next 17 years the Lockwood Brewery was a key brewer within Hammond's United Breweries Ltd.
In 1960 Hammond's United Breweries Ltd merged with Hope & Anchor Breweries Ltd and John Jeffrey & Co. Ltd, to form Northern Breweries Ltd, later named Northern Breweries of Great Britain Ltd.
After further brewery acquisitions, the Company became United Breweries Ltd and subsequently Charrington United Breweries Ltd, after a final merger with Charrington & Co. Ltd in 1962.
The Lockwood Brewery was closed in 1963.
The manufacturer's mark states - Reginald Corfield Ltd Lombard Road, London. S.W.19.
