Paul & Guy Senior
The Oak Well Brewery was founded by Guy Senior on Pontefract Road, Barnsley, in 1857.
The firm traded as Paul & Guy Senior who were brewers, maltsters, and wine & spirit merchants.
The Barnsley Brewery Co. Ltd
The Company was registered in 1888 as the Barnsley Brewery Co. Ltd, to acquire Paul & Guy Senior.
Early Victorian advertising for Paul & Guy Senior, shows that the Oak Well was split, presumably changing to one word, Oakwell, when the Company was registered.
The Oakwell Brewery, with 250 public houses, was acquired by John Smith's Tadcaster Brewery Co. Ltd in 1961.
John Smith's was purchased by Courage, Barclay, Simonds & Co. Ltd in 1970. The renamed Company, Courage Ltd, was acquired by the Imperial Tobacco Group Ltd in 1972 resulting in the eventual closure of the Oakwell Brewery in 1976.
Between 1997 and 2013 parts of the site were used by a new brewing venture, also named the Oakwell Brewery.
The new business closed and site was completely demolished at the end of 2013.
