1700s to the 1800s

The Argyle Brewery on Chambers Street, Edinburgh,  is reputed to have been established in 1710, when beer production commenced.
By 1759 Archibald Campbell was running the business which specialised in the brewing of porter.
It was trading as the partnership of Campbell & Young in 1799, becoming Campbell, Young & Co. in the early 1800s.
The firm held a Royal Warrant granted by King William IV in 1837, and this practice continued through the reign of successive monarchs until 1963.
The Company was registered in 1896 to acquire the Argyle Brewery, based in Edinburgh, and Hope & King wine & spirit merchants, and whisky blenders, based in Glasgow.

1900 to 1970

In 1925 the Company acquired the South-Western Brewery Co. Ltd which was struggling financially. The Newton Stewart site was used as a distribution depot for trade in the south west of Scotland until 1970.
Whitbread & Co. Ltd acquired an interest in the Company in 1965.
Archibald Campbell, Hope & King Ltd was acquired outright by Whitbread & Co. Ltd in 1967.
The firm's 73 public houses were sold to Drybrough & Co. Ltd, Vaux & Associated Breweries Ltd and Thomas Usher & Son Ltd in 1969, and brewing ceased in 1970.
Archibald, Campbell, Hope & King has retained some interest in whisky blending and bottling.
